Membership in the S.A.R.
Do you have a Ancestor who contributed to the
American Revolution?
A Lineage Society
The SAR is a "lineage" society. This means that each member has traced their family tree back to a point of having an ancestor who
supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783. Membership in the SAR is open to any man eighteen
years or over, who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the war for American Independence.
Our Membership
Today the SAR consists of 28,000 members in over 500 chapters in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, and
the United Kingdom. Almost 165,000 descendants of the men and women Patriots of the American Revolution have been admitted
since our founding. SAR members include:
16 presidents of the United States
Brigadier, Lieutenant and five star generals,
Presidents of several colleges and universities,
Ambassadors, Members of the Supreme Court, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. Congress. Members include small businessmen,
doctors, lawyers, school teachers, CPAs, elected local, state, and federal officials, and government employees, all of whom have a
deep affection for America its heritage and institutions.
Do You Have A Patriot Ancestor?
Considering the numerical possibilities of a person having a Patriot ancestor, it could be very likely that there is one in your family
line. If you are not sure whether any of your ancestors lived in the United States during the Revolution or whether they contributed to
the cause of the Revolution, don't lose heart. The members of the Flagler Chapter SAR will assist you with your linage research and
help you to find your Patriot if you have one.
Getting Started
Many prospective members, while they might consider joining the SAR, are often hesitant over the prospect of doing their own
genealogy, obtaining the necessary proof and completing the application requirements. If you have little or no experience with
Genealogy, doing the SAR research can be a daunting prospect. At the Flagler Chapter, we can fully appreciate this and that is
why one of our members is always assigned to each prospective member to assist them with the research process.
Learning about your ancestors and your family line with the help of our Chapter members, can be a really fun and interesting
experience. Establishing with the SAR, one of your ancestors as a Revolutionary Patriot, is a way for you to honor a family member
as one who contributed to the founding of the United States of America. So why not stop by and visit us at a monthly meeting or give
us a call and let’s talk about your possible Patriot.
